Services and products

Our team of veterinarians and registered veterinary technicians are able to provide many services that will help in the prevention and treatment of illnesses and injury. Appointments are recommended so we can set aside the appropriate amount of time with your pet but we will happily see walk-in or other urgent cases.

Wellness Exams

Dr. Sophie with Oliver (Cat)

Your pet can benefit greatly from regular wellness examinations or checkups. Whether your pet is a youngster, a senior citizen, or any age in between, wellness examinations provide an excellent opportunity for us to conduct a thorough physical examination and develop a health profile for your pet. This information will help us identify medical problems and any other issues that can affect your pet’s health and quality of life.

During a wellness exam, we will evaluate all of your pet’s major organ systems. We will also ask you questions about your pet’s behavior, appetite, exercise habits, and regular activities at home. This is an excellent time for us to talk about about any routine diagnostic testing that may be good your pet , or any vaccinations that may be due. Even if your pet seems healthy, a wellness examination is a good opportunity to note any changes that you may not notice at home, such as weight gain or loss, or other subtle changes. This can help detect early signs of illness and address health issues before they progress.

A wellness examination is also your chance to have us address your questions or concerns about your pet. We welcome your questions. No question is too small or too silly, and it is our pleasure to address your concerns. We strive to help you understand your pet’s health considerations, and we encourage you to be involved in decisions regarding your pet’s health care.

Finally, wellness examinations help us establish a relationship with you and your pet. Through your pet’s physical examinations, other wellness procedures, and our consultations with you, we get to know your pet and learn about his or her lifestyle, personality, health risks, home environment, and other important information. We encourage you to use wellness examinations to take an active role in your pet’s health care.

Surgery

Dr. Sophie in surgery

Our team is trained to perform routine elective surgeries such as spaying or castration as well as non-elective soft tissue surgeries  such as lump removals, abdominal surgery to remove intestinal obstructions or masses, bladder stone removal and wound repairs.

More complicated orthopedic procedures are performed here by a board certified surgeon who will come to us when required. This allows pets to have surgery in an environment familiar to them.

Radiology and Ultrasound

Sixteen Mile is proud to offer the latest technology with digital x-rays that can be obtained quickly while you wait. The digital technology also allows x-rays to be sent to specialists if further evaluation is necessary.

Ultrasound evaluations of your pet’s heart or abdomen are performed by a trained technologist who will come to our hospital. The images are interpreted by board certified specialists to provide the most accurate diagnoses.

Dentistry

Dental services must provide much more than just a cleaning. Our pets cannot tell us when a tooth hurts. A proper oral evaluation must be done under a general anesthetic so that a full set of digital x-rays can be done as well as 360 degree evaluation of each and every tooth. It is very common to find not only periodontal disease but fractured teeth and even infection deep in a tooth root. We apply the same strict anesthetic monitoring practices as with all surgeries to make the procedure very safe. All of our veterinarians have undergone additional training in veterinary dentistry and are able to treat a variety of conditions.

Acupuncture

Oliver (cat) getting acupuncture

Acupuncture is a non-invasive therapy which stimulates and rebalances the nervous system, increases circulation, and causes the release of anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving compounds.  Combined with laser therapy and massage, acupuncture can safely and effectively increase mobility, improve nerve function, and relieve pain.  We are excited to announce that Dr. Diana Gibbs has completed her acupuncture training and is now offering treatments for our patients.

Nutrition and Diet

Lisa & client

Pets have various nutritional requirements depending on their age, breed and health status. Decisions regarding your pet’s nutrition should not be made without first consulting a veterinarian.

We carry specific lines of foods and supplements designed to meet the needs of a variety of medical conditions and our specialized diets also are a great aid in the treatment of many illnesses. Please do not hesitate to talk with any one of our staff regarding your pet’s dietary needs.

Behaviour

Lisa & Clients walking in

Understanding animal behavior can be challenging at times and we are here to provide the necessary counseling to pet owners to help them achieve a happy relationship with their pet. We understand problems can arise at any age and are here to help by consultation. It is not unusual for a problem behavior to be a direct result of a medical condition so a visit to the veterinarian is the first step.
